Tricks for long, healthy hair.

So, there is a lot of information out there about not washing your often to promote long, healthy hair, but I personally have a love/hate relationship with this. Too little washing can cause scalp issues, therefore causing hair issues to eventually follow. Too much washing can also cause another basket of problems. So now you ask, what is the key amount? Well, no head is created equal, but to start, every other, to every fourth is what I typically recommend. If your scalp tends to get greasy quickly, let’s do every other. If your scalp is a bit on the dryer side, let’s do every 3 to 4 days. On wash day, I love to get in the shower with a paddle brush (Aveda’s paddle brush works great), and really brush the scalp well, running the brush all the way through the ends (you can also do this the night before washing to bring the oils from scalp to your ends). Next, a good, professional brand shampoo, that is recommended by your stylist, and customized to your hair type. Really scrub your scalp well, making sure to get a good cleanse. I always know I’m getting a good cleanse when I can really feel the suds building up. A conditioner is always recommended as well, to keep your hair healthy and long. Leave conditioner on your hair for at least 3 minutes. Now, for styling products…. again, ask your stylist for recommendations, depending on how you like to style your hair. Either air drying or blow drying is ok, but PLEASE make sure your hair is 100% dry before any curling iron or straight tools are applied to hair. If using heat, a heat protectant should be used before applying any heat. Now, you should style your hair well enough that you don’t have to apply heat again until your next wash! This is key! Changing out your pillowcase to a satin or silk pillowcase is also a must! Trimming your hair is recommended every 6-8 weeks, if trying to maintain the length. If you're on a mission to get it longer, you can go 12-14 weeks! Only color your hair by a professional and listen to their advice on the healthiest options for your hair.
